Watanabe wins First Ever Antarctic Triathlon
A little bit of history was made when six Japanese competitors took part in the first ever Antarctic Triathlon on 22 November 2013. The experimental event involved disciplines of running, mountain biking and x-country skiing.
Mikio Watanabe took first position in a time of 4:07.05 hrs, twelve minutes ahead of Kazuhiro Kobari with Shoekei Suda in third place.
The Antarctic Triathlon will now become an annual event in Antarctica and there will also be a new Antarctic Duathlon, involving the sequential disciplines of running, montaining biking and running.
The next Antarctic Triathlon / Antarctic Duathlon trip is scheduled to take place on 14 - 17 January 2015. Full details will be announced at the end of January 2014 when registration will open for these exciting new events.
